Session: Color Photography and Film

Chairs: Alice Plutino and Barbara Cattaneo

This special session originates from the series of conferences “Colour Photography and Film: Analysis, Preservation, and Conservation of Analogue and Digital Materials” organized by the Associazione Italiana del Colore. Following the success of its third edition, held in Amsterdam in September 2024, the organizers have decided to bring the discussion to the AIC 2026 Midterm Meeting, opening it to the wider international community of color researchers and professionals.  This special session explores current research and professional practices on the analysis, preservation, and conservation of analogue and digital colour photography and film. Contributions address a wide range of topics, including the history and materiality of colour processes, the challenges of long-term preservation and restoration, and the strategies for digital migration and access. Particular attention is given to interdisciplinary approaches that integrate conservation science, imaging technologies, and heritage studies, highlighting how colour photography and film have shaped society and culture.

By bringing together scientists, conservators, archivists, and curators, the session aims to foster dialogue and collaboration across disciplines and to promote innovative solutions for safeguarding colour heritage for future generations.
